About Top Notch Technique
Top Notch Technique helps guitarists of all skill levels break past their physical limitations on the guitar so they can learn and play the music they love much more easily and with more expressive control—without a huge time investment.
In addition to covering the core principles of technique, practice strategy, and guitar ergonomics in depth, I've compiled every technique exercise that I've ever found valuable for my own playing as a professional guitarist of over 20 years.
Each exercise is demonstrated, explained, and included with sheet music, tabs, and a list of the numerous benefits you can gain from them depending on what you choose to focus on while practicing.
TNT is everything you need to skyrocket your technical abilities on the guitar and maintain your chops overtime. No more searching for and piecing together a hodgepodge of technical drills.
This system is for those who want to keep their progress moving by having an encyclopedic guide and a life-long resource for technical improvement on the guitar; a resource where no stone is left unturned.
I totally understand that building your knowledge and skillset from disparate areas of the internet can be an extreme chore, and how that extra effort of essentially creating your own curriculum from various sources can take away from the pleasure of learning.
That's why I've compiled everything I know about guitar technique into one place, and I'm beyond excited to share it with you.
Technique is the one barrier between you and every single thing you want to play on the guitar. No matter your genre or style of choice, no matter your age or skill level, everything you play takes technique.
Level up your technique and you've leveled up your entire guitar world.
"Such a great resource . . . has been amazing for my playing."
"There are some awesome exercises that I have added to my daily routine that are just what I feel I needed."
- Geoff Crowley (from Australia)
Every professional guitarist I've ever known has prioritized working on technique
And it doesn't take as much time as you'd think!
People avoid technique practice because it takes so long to see the results.
But it's the opposite of "easy come easy go."
The guitar fitness you gain by doing just a small amount of technique work every time you practice will stay with you and be used in everything you play.
It can take as little as 5 to 20 minutes a day to substantially increase your overall guitar facility and dexterity.
And with Top Notch Technique, you won't have to spend any time guessing or searching around the internet for what to work on.
Once you increase your baseline physical ability on the guitar, learning new material becomes SO much faster and so much more fun.
And with my 2-exercise rotating framework that I teach inside Top Notch Technique, you'll see just how simple it is to get started right away and stick with it.
If you take it seriously and use this method and resource, you'll see substantial improvement in your overall ability to play the guitar within six months—if not sooner.
The thing is, Top Notch Technique is not just a course.
It does include video lessons explaining and demonstrating every exercise, and it does include lectures and visual presentations on how to practice most effectively, how to solve problems in your playing, and how to find the best ergonomic positions for your unique body.
But that's not all it is.
Top Notch Technique is primarily a PATHWAY for you to get significantly better at playing guitar as effectively as possible by specifically enhancing your physical capabilities on the instrument.
Yes, it is a course, but it's also a very specific method (my 2-exercise framework) that you can start using right away and stick with easily.
PLUS, it's a life-long resource library of exercises that you can reference forever.
Yes, when you sign up, you get life-time access, including any and all upgrades or future additions for FREE.
So Top Notch Technique is three things:
1. Course lessons
2. A Practice framework that WORKS
3. A Library of Exercises
Plus you get the accompanying TNT book.
In the book, every exercise is listed for you based on the RESULTS that YOU want to see in your own playing.
I call it the "Desired Results Index."
No matter what type of guitar player you are, TNT will help you reach the freedom on guitar that you dream of.
The freedom to play anything you want with increasing ease and grace.
The freedom to focus on the MUSIC, the emotional expression, the groove, the other musicians you're playing with, the FEELING...
Instead of being distracted by the physical limitations holding you back.
I want you to experience that freedom on the guitar!
So join me today inside Top Notch Technique.
I can't wait to see you on the inside!
~ Jared
"Really valuable and well worth the money. It really feels like having an actual physical teacher right in front of you.
Not many online teachers know how to accomplish that.
l've had 4 years of classical guitar academy training and I feel like these lessons teach me a lot more, allowing me to review any lesson at any time at a fraction of the cost of 'real' lessons."
- Gert De Groof
I couldn't believe how much it made a difference...
...when I focused on technique as a necessary introduction to every single practice session.
I had been working on repertoire for months—music that I LOVED playing.
But there were a few spots that, no matter how much I isolated them and repeated them, I just wasn't able to get smooth.
Luckily, I love working on technique, so I stumbled on something accidentally...
I decided to work purely on my physical limitations every time I played—using at least two exercises from a list that I rotated through—before practicing anything else .
To my surprise, even after weeks away from the pieces I was working on before, when I came back to practicing them, those trouble spots were FIXED!
That's when I learned that repeating a difficult passage or chord transition over and over again sometimes just doesn't do the trick.
But conditioning our hand movements through various comprehensive physical guitar exercises DOES work.
I wondered why this was the case.
Comprehensive is the key word.
Exercises that execute every variation or permutation of the fingers are enhancing coordination and dexterity comprehensively between every tendon and muscle and synapse involved—not just for one isolated movement from one difficult measure.
When those difficult isolated movements are holding us back, what's happening is that there are weakness surrounding the primary movement.
So repeating the primary movement over and over again is not addressing the true need.
Comprehensive permutation practice—every finger moving to every finger with full focus on the mechanical execution—addresses and strengthens those adjacent, hidden movements that are needed.
And the beautiful thing is, by practicing technique in this comprehensive way, we're improving ALL of the problems spots in ALL the pieces we ever want to play.
This leads to true physical fluency and proficiency on the instrument instead of just memorized, rote movement for certain songs, pieces, licks, or scales.
Now you can see why 5 to 20 minutes a day of this kind of work is truly game-changing for your guitar playing.
It's the simplest and most straight-forward way to make everything you ever want to play on the guitar easier, smoother, and more fun.
I also found that the ritual of tuning, warming up, and working on technique BEFORE playing "real" music decreased any resistance I previously had to sitting down and practicing.
It helped me ease into the session in a way that I now found extremely calming and pleasurable.
I realized that I had developed a negative association with the start of my practice time.
For some reason, when I started working on the music I wanted to play, I was always disappointed.
I didn't know it in the moment, but I was comparing how I sounded at the END of my last practice session with how I sounded at the beginning of my next one.
That tiny negative association added up and made it harder for me to be consistent.
I wanted to look forward to practicing, not resist it.
By always working on technique FIRST (with the strategy I teach in Top Notch Technique), by the time I got to the "real" music, I felt truly warm-up physically, mentally, and emotionally.
I've never looked back.
That technique-being-the-solution discovery happened back when I was teaching private lessons.
I immediately had all my students rotate through a series of technique exercises as part of the their practice time.
The change I saw in their playing was so exciting!
Several people broke through plateaus they had been struggling with for years.
I should had figured it out much sooner...
After all, over many, many year of teaching guitar, almost every time a student came to me wanting to learn something new, their technique was specifically the one thing holding them back from being able to learn it quickly and move on.
I've heard some people say that you shouldn't work on any exercises that aren't directly related to the music you want to play.
I wholeheartedly disagree.
Physical technique work (with the right exercises of course) is like working on the physical part ALL the music you EVER want to play at once.
I hope you'll join Top Notch Technique and try it for yourself to see what I mean.
If you try it and aren't completely sold on the benefits of this approach, you can get your money back within 90 days of signing up.
Remember, improving overall technique takes longer than any other type of learning on the guitar.
If learning a new lick or song that's within your current skill level is like plucking a piece of fruit off of a tree and eating it, practicing technique is like watering the tree.
And that's exactly why technique practice is avoided by most—because you can't SEE it changing in real time.
But it will grow if you water it, it will just take time.
Do this approach consistently and strategically (like how I show you in Top Notch Technique) and you'll be blown away by how much you can improve.
~ Jared
"In a 6 months of giving focused time to technique, my ability to play has leapfrogged.
This course helps me find the fixes. I keep coming back to different parts again and again, always prompted by something I’m working on that brings a deficiency to light.
My ability to feel the music is enhanced because I can better express myself. I can so much better express myself because I can better articulate my thoughts through my touch and through the guitar.
So it is here that the real value comes to light. TNT does so much more than offer the fixes.
It helps me find my voice."

Make your musical and artistic goals much easier to achieve by mastering the fundamentals of guitar technique.
The one thing between you and everything you want to play on the guitar is technique.
I know that technique is not the most exciting topic, but when technique is effortless then we can truly focus on the music, the art, the expression, the communication—everything that inspires us about music!
By consciously working on technique in a focused and controlled way—by knowing how to approach practicing any technique on the guitar to make it effortless—then every other musical goal we have becomes so much easier.
Purposefully practicing technique in the right way can truly be transformational for any guitarist.
I've worked with students trying to learn fun or advanced musical concepts like scale patterns, chord inversions, or a fancy fingerpicking song, but the first thing I notice is ... that their technique needs help.
If technique is holding us back then it doesn't matter at all how awesome the piece of music is that we're trying to learn. But if our technique is effortless then we can learn fifty songs in the time it took us to learn one before.
If there's one thing that you could work on that would make all the songs you want to play easier—every single one of them—wouldn't you do it? It's technique.
I love the idea of practicing the language of music; of practicing in a way that is literally like practicing everything you'll ever want to play in the future because it's practicing the ingredients and fundamentals that everything else is made of. Technique is one of those things. It transcends style and genre and taste.
Master the fundamentals of technique, make technique effortless by learning how to practice it properly, and finally unlock your potential to play any piece of music that inspires you.
"Probably one of the best teachers I've ever had online."
"Do the exercises and you'll watch your guitar technique and your guitar playing go to that next level."

I am very glad to have this valuable resource to pull up and use at my convenience.

- DebDilley from Montana
It takes courage to work on technique.
It takes groundedness.
It takes self-confidence.
Because it's not the song you love, it's not the recognizable riff people want to hear.
It takes trusting yourself and trusting the process.
And trusting that the process will lead to making the sounds you dream of making on the guitar.
Every single guitar player can easily get better by simply working on technique—strategically, a little bit every time they play.
If you adopt this approach, it will become your super power.
I wish I could do the exercises for you. But I can't.
I wish I could show you how it FEELS to be able to play something that you thought was out of reach six months before.
But you can only experience that by diving in, giving it a shot, and sticking with it.
A year from now, you could be playing something that you only dreamed of playing before. I want that for you.
But it's not going to happen without a plan, a strategy, and an approach designed by someone who has walked the path before you.
The choice is yours.
My goal is to help you achieve your dreams on the guitar just like I've done for many others.
I hope you'll choose the future where those dreams come true—all because you signed up, put in the work, and stuck with it long enough to see it unfold.
I want that to be an easy choice. That's why you can join the program, try my approach and my exercises for up to 90 days, and if you don't notice substantial improvements, I'll give you all of your money back.
Here's to the you in the future, where all the music you love is easier to learn and play than ever before!
All because you joined Top Notch Technique and applied it.

Hi! I'm Jared.
I'm a guitarist from Seattle who has been teaching and playing professionally for over twenty years.
Over more than two decades of teaching, I taught thousands of hours of lessons to hundreds of students while continuing to practice and learn diligently myself.
Throughout this process, I discovered a deep passion for creating unique approaches to attaining a high level of musicianship on the guitar.
I learned firsthand that not all exercises are created equal. To attain any desired musical skill we must design a specific and thorough method that takes us straight to the center of our goal, leaving no gaps in our ability or knowledge. I’ve created, tested, and refined a multitude of these methods over the years and the curriculum presented in this course is one of them.
My goal is to help musicians everywhere find more fulfillment in their practicing by sharing approaches that really work.
I put a great amount of thought and care into creating this course with the sole intention that it be truly valuable for you. I hope you find this to be the case and I look forward to creating more courses that help to deepen the level of joy we can experience through music.
Let me know if you have any questions or feedback any time by leaving a comment within the course, or just email me.
Happy Practicing! :)
