Let’s talk about where I was back in 2010, when everything changed for me. 

I was 26 years old and living in a tiny apartment, surrounded by sheet music and practice routines I thought would someday "unlock jazz."

I had no idea how to play over chord changes without sounding robotic.

I had no confidence in my improvisation—it always felt awkward or forced.

I had no clear roadmap to actually get better, despite practicing for hours every day.

...and I had just bombed a jam session where I couldn’t keep up with the other players. It was humiliating.

This meant I couldn’t jam with other musicians confidently, let alone enjoy the music I’d spent so much time trying to learn.

There’s a stupid myth out there that you need to know hundreds of scales and modes to play jazz well.

The truth is, I love practicing that stuff. But, most of the time, we're learning all of that out of order, and it just leads to feeling overwhelmed.

And if you want to actually play real jazz music, sounding good and natural, it’s almost never the answer to stress about advanced concepts before just being able to play in a simple and enjoyable way through a tune.

I know, because I tried. I spent years chasing down scale books, theory guides, and video tutorials.

I gave it everything I had. Hours a day, every day, for years.

I gave it my BEST shot. I thought I just needed more practice, more theory, more everything.

And it didn’t work. I still sounded stiff, robotic, and just… not like a jazz musician.

Because I played by the rules and I did everything right…

I ended up burnt out and stuck in an endless cycle of self-doubt.

I ended up with stacks of practice books, hours of wasted effort, and no confidence to show for it. And I hated it…

I hated it because I knew deep down there had to be a better way—a way to sound great and actually enjoy playing.

I had goals, dreams, and aspirations. I wanted to walk into a jam session and feel like I belonged.

...and this aimless cycle of random practice routines wasn’t going to work.

So I did what everyone else out there does in this situation—I started searching for answers.

I stumbled upon a forum where musicians were sharing stories about how they unlocked jazz by simplifying their approach—playing fewer notes, focusing on melody, and really listening to the music.

This was a cool concept to me, and as I dug deeper, I realized that they weren’t drowning in scales—they were playing from the heart.

They also struggled with confidence, hated feeling lost in theory, and wanted to play music that actually sounded good.

The only difference was they stopped overcomplicating things and started focusing on the essentials.
