“How do I sound more melodic when soloing?”
That’s what I get asked all the time.
There are three big answers:
Phrasing
Melodic Patterns
Follow the rhythm of the melody
This lesson is about the third item.
Following the melody when soloing allows us to sound unique on each song, prevents us from getting lost while improvising, and helps us not run out of ideas.
This approach could just fall under the category of “phrasing,” but it’s so important (since the melody is the song), I like to address it on its own.
I teach this method in a jazz context, but it’s very effective for any genre.
